Las Vegas 51s first baseman Dominic Smith heads to outfield

Posted by Insane Buzz on July 23, 2018 at 1:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Smith is the better defensive first baseman, but Alonso is strictly limited to first base.

“He’s going to have to play the outfield. When you get a DH, I can do that. I can go back and forth,” manager Tony DeFrancesco said. “I can DH one and put one at first, but a National League game most likely he’s going to have to play a lot more to that and maybe give Peter a day off. But right now he’s planning on playing outfield, first base and DH.”

Smith was in the lineup Sunday for the 51s, playing left field.

The 51s will play host to the Nashville, the Triple-A affiliate of the Athletics, this week and have a designated hitter before a four-game series against a National League-affiliate.

The valley’s high temperatures likely factored into the deaths of seven people last week, the Clark County coroner confirmed.

Skies this will be mostly clear this week, with a slight chance of showers, mostly in the Spring Mountains, the weather service said.

The taxpayers and Las Vegas Metro's troubled radio system

Posted by Insane Buzz on July 23, 2018 at 1:25 AM Comments comments (0)

How many bites of the apple do taxpayers get regarding Metro’s radio system (“More radio issues,” Thursday Review-Journal)? A 2010 contract for $42 million was a failure, and I understand we have sued to get some or all of our money back. That system was replaced by an 11-year contract with Motorola in 2014 for $31.7 million (now $57.4 million), which now appears to be inadequate as well. Who or what is next? And how much will it cost?

Arizona student's nonprofit helps homeless in Las Vegas

Posted by Insane Buzz on July 23, 2018 at 1:25 AM Comments comments (0)

Grover, a Grand Canyon University student, said the idea was born out of passion and boredom. She wasn’t allowed to get a job because her mom wanted her to focus on schoolwork. Instead, she left her camera and a notebook in her car and began stopping to talk to homeless people holding cardboard signs.

Of the roughly 60 people Grover approached for her blog, 45 agreed to be interviewed and photographed.

Grover met the subject of her second interview, Rocky, in Tempe, Arizona, on Halloween in 2016. Rocky was a Navy veteran in a wheelchair who lived under a bridge. Rocky, who traveled with a group of about 20 homeless people, was well-known in the Tempe area for being friendly and saying hello to everyone.

Longtime ambasssador on the Las Vegas Strip dies

Posted by Insane Buzz on July 23, 2018 at 1:20 AM Comments comments (0)

The tuxedo-clad, silver-haired showroom manager was a familiar figure at the entrance of Harrah’s Showroom and Harrah’s Cabaret. For more than 30 years he ran the rooms’ operations, escorting dignitaries to their reserved booths and ticket-holders to their seats. Strano learned the craft while working for the late Bob Stupak at Vegas World, located on the property where the Stratosphere now stands.

“Guys like Domenic don’t exist in Las Vegas anymore,” Alan Glist of GFour Productions, whose “Menopause the Musical” performs at Harrah’s Cabaret. The show celebrated 5,000 shows in Las Vegas on Wednesday night. “I used to sit with him, four-five nights a week, and listened to his stories. He knew every gangster, every entertainer, to come through Las Vegas. He was one of the great guys you just loved and respected.”

Drones, Bears, and Summer Camps:

Here are the stories we'll be following the week of July 16, 2018:

Tuesday

When you weigh up a university degree as opposed to an apprenticeship course, do you see one as having a higher status than the other? We look at a new study which shows how shifting public perceptions of the value of apprenticeships don't necessarily reflect the reality.

Wednesday

Follow the 1,400 kilometre journey of Napa the bear, as it travels across Europe from Serbia to Switzerland to become the first resident of the Arosa Bear conservation centre (Arosa Bärenlandexternal link) in the eastern canton of Graubünden.

Thursday

How many different types of drones are there? How do they work? How much do they cost, and where am I allowed to fly one in Switzerland? Drones are everywhere these days, and on Thursday we will answer some of the most common questions – sent by our readers – about drone technology.

8 Things You Need To Start A Videography Business:

By Steve Mbego

What You Need ALSO READ: Why tycoon wants Sh920m Imperial Bank deposits Capital To start a videography company, Danny Prince of Prince Creations says you’ll need at least Sh600,000. Most of this amount will go to buying a good camera, a good editing machine, registration and obtaining the necessary licenses. You will also need to consider operational costs like renting an office.

Camera and other shooting accessories You’ll require a good DSLR video camera, which costs about Sh300,000. Other shooting accessories like lightings, dolly track, Ronin, and drone may be necessary if you don’t want to hire them on short-term basis.

Computer You will also require a good video editing computer with fast processing speed for rendering the clips. Most videographers prefer an iMac which costs from Sh200,000. For Windows computers which come cheaper, you’ll need an i5 which costs between Sh50,000 and Sh70,000, but you’ll have to contend with slow video rendering speeds and sometimes poor quality of the videos. “Time is important, and we prefer a good computer because of the heavy work involved,” Prince says.
